I wish a very Happy New Year 2017 to English learners everywhere!

I hope that one of your New Year Resolutions is to improve your English during 2017. A new year resolution is simply a goal, it’s just that it is a goal you make as you begin a new calendar year…

Like any goal you set for yourself (goal setting), make sure that any New Year resolution that you make is ‘specific’. Saying e.g. ‘I want to improve my English’ is too general (not specific). Your brain works best for you when you tell it EXACTLY what you want…

To make your goal SPECIFIC you need to ‘nail it down’ (idiom – to make something certain). So; which aspects of English do you want to improve e.g. speaking, reading, writing, listening etc? You need to set a separate goal (resolution) for each one you want to improve in…

If you want to improve your conversation skill, your specific goal might be to ‘hold a 10-minute conversation with a native English speaker’…

So (in this example) – ‘Set a date’ by when you will have achieved your goal to hold a 10-minute conversation with a native English speaker. Again 2017 is too general (not specific enough). So, let’s say you decide that you want to hold that 10-minute conversation with a native English speaker by 1st May 2017…

Next‘Write down your goal’ (using pen and paper). Write it down as if you have already achieved your goal! For example: ‘It’s 1st May 2017 and I am now having comfortable 10-minute conversations with native English speakers’…

Next‘Read your goal out loud’. Read your goal out loud at least three times a day while standing in front of a mirror…

Next‘Add passion to your voice’! Add passion to your voice as you read your goal out loud, as you stand in front of the mirror. Imagine how you will feel when you can hold a comfortable 10-minute conversation with a native English speaker? Imagine how impressed your teacher and your friends and family will be now that you have achieved your goal (your New Year resolution)…

Do all this for each goal (resolution) you set for yourself…

Very important! You MUST do this every day. As long as you also put in the necessary work to be able to hold a 10-minute conversation with a native English speaker by 1st may 2017, you will achieve your goal. You will achieve your goal because you have made your goal very SPECIFIC and you have done the work that is necessary to make your goal a reality.
